Private college scam is bigger than Vyapam- CBI says NO manpower
The Supreme Court Friday expressed its “tentative view” that CBI should not only investigate cases relating to Vyapam scam, but also alleged irregularities in admissions in pvt colleges in MP. Exam conducted by govt body is Vyapam and  private body is DMAT. There are 15 private dental colleges and six private medical colleges in MP, with nearly 2,800 seats.
CBI described the alleged DMAT scam bigger than Vyapam in “scope and depth” and expressed its inability to investigate the case citing shortage of manpower. NEWSLINK

A Delhi court has dismissed the bail application of former BSP MP Dhananjay Singh’s dentist wife Jagriti Singh, facing trial in her maid’s murder case, considering the “extreme brutality” with which the offence was allegedly committed.

Dentist failed to let on he had left part of an instrument in a teenager’s root canal which was not discovered until three years later when the tooth broke.
Dr Gauran Lakra has been censured and fined $3000 after admitting professional misconduct over his treatment of the boy at the Ruapehu Dental Excellence Centre in 2008.
The teen had root canal work done but one of the fine instruments broke off and was left in the canal, according to a Health Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal decision released on Friday. NEWSLINK

Ex-Medical Council of India (MCI) president Dr Ketan Desai is facing a Supreme Court probe into all manner of allegations into the future of the profession’s regulator.
The three-member Supreme Court bench of Chief Justice HL Dattu and Justices Arun Mishra and Amitava Roy yesterday (17 August) gave a final opportunity to the Medical Council of India (MCI), Union Health Ministry and ex-MCI president, Dr Ketan Desai to file their response affidavit within four weeks and fixed 4 November 2015 for the final hearing in the PIL against the rigged MCI election held in December, 2013 and seeking a CBI investigation of the MCI election (People for Better Treatment through its president, Kunal Saha vs Union of India). Probe NRI quota admissions in pvt medical colleges
Whistle Blower Dr Anand Rai once again lodged a complaint with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) against private medical and dental colleges of the State for giving admissions to students under the NRI quota without following norms.
He alleged that these colleges had given admissions to those students who were not NRI and they didn’t even take the MPPMT or DMAT.
In his complaint, Dr Rai requested the CBI to lodge an FIR in this regard and probe admissions of last 10 years on the NRI quota in 6 private medical and 15 dental colleges. LINK

CAG report said DCI has failed to effectively manage dental colleges. Admissions in excess of sanctioned capacities were occurring consistently from 2006-07 to 2010- 11. 441 BDS students’ admissions cancelled on SC order
All 441 BDS second-year students whose admission was cancelled by the Supreme Court last month have now been barred by 12 private dental colleges in the state from attending classes. State government and Baba Farid University of Health Sciences (BFUHS) refused to registering them for the annual exam. Strict implementation of rules to check unfair means during examination by the Baba Farid University of Health Sciences (BFUHS) has blown the lid off an ugly reality — nearly half of the “future doctors” flunked the annual exam.

State to move HC against denial of DCI
The government will approach the High Court against the decision of  DCI  not to grant recognition to 100 BDS seats — 50 each in the newly started Alappuzha and the proposed Thrissur Govt Dental Colleges — for 2015-16 citing lack of infrastructure and faculty.
Following a surprise inspection in April, the DCI had refused to give permission to admit the second batch of BDS students in Alappuzha Government Dental College. Management quota cut by the council
In a major blow to Maharshi Markandeshwar Medical College (MMMC), Kumarhatti, Solan, the MCI has reduced its management quota seats for MBBS course for 2015-16 from 75 to 42 seats.The 33 seats had been filled in excess of the management quota last year and consequently, the state quota was reduced. Bill introduced to rein private dental/medical colleges
The bill provides for insertion of a sub clause in Section 3 of the principal Act for regulation of admission in private medical educational institutions on the basis of merit obtained in Centralised CAT.
It also seeks to plug some loop holes which helps institutions to introduce element of opaqueness and irregularities in the admission process, the minister said. MP hight court issued notices to MCI, director med edu in a public interest litigation. The three students, Ajay Raghuvanshi, Tanmay Maheshwari and Karam Veer Singh, who scored less than 50% aggregate marks in physics, chemistry and biology in the entrance test conducted by the Indore-based Aurbindo Institute of Medical Science, allegedly paid donations to get seats in the MBBS course, Dr Anand Rai, a whistleblower, has claimed in his PIL. Consumer forum asks Mumbai dentist to pay 2 Lakhs
Bring to book a dentist for faulty treatment, a consumer forum has recently ordered. The forum held Dr Jayesh Dube guilty of negligence and indulging in unfair trade practice and directed him to pay Rs 2 lakh compensation to a Mulund woman Saroj Cheda.
On July 19, 2005, patient, visited Dr Dube and after a check-up, he told her that one tooth would have to extracted and another could be salvaged. He also told her that the extracted tooth would be replaced with a new one that would last for 15-20 years.
The forum said there was no evidence to prove Cheda’s claims about the cancer scare caused by Dr Dube. But it relied on the opinion of expert dentists regarding the procedures conducted on Cheda. WHO RUNS MEDICAL/ DENTAL EDUCATION IN INDIA?
Did you know that any person in the Union of India ( not necessarily a doctor or dentist) can challenge the authority and position of the President of the Medical or Dental Council. In a recent order by the Kerala High Court, the Honourable Judge has given an order that a writ petition filed by Dr V. Viswanath and Dr M. Ravindranath challenging the authority of Dr Dibeyendu Mazumdhar to be the President of DCI, is maintainable. This opens the gates to challenge the membership of the President of DCI who many of us believe has usurped office in violation of the Dentists Act. His membership under 3( d) from two private Universities, one in Jharkand and the other in Uttar Pradesh is highly questionable because these institutions cannot technically elect persons to the DCI. Even more enigmatic is the fact that Dr Mazumdhar is shown as a faculty in both these institutions even while he is an employee of the West Bengal Government. If that is not enough, the Government of West Bengal ( in an RTI reply) reiterates that it is not even aware that their employee Dr Mazumdar is supposed to be a honorary teacher in two other states!
Who is ruling our statutory bodies? It is high time we stood up and questioned our so called authorities! We have questioned it in the past and we need to do so now- whoever be the person!!!!

Eight days after a large piece of a man’s acrylic denture went missing, it turned up in an unusual place: his esophagus.

HC cancels MDS admissions done without entrance
The Punjab and Haryana high court has cancelled a section of admissions made in July by private dental colleges to MDS course. These colleges had on their own admitted students who hadnot appeared in a common entrance test.
The court recorded that a division bench had already held that the DCI had implicit powers to supervise qualifications or eligibility standards for admission into medical institutions and the regulations framed could not be beyond the legislative competence. ..MORE HERE

Study was to determine the shaping ability of three nickel-titanium endodontic file systems by comparing three parameters: canal deviation, apical foramen position and instrumentation time. A glide path was established in 30 simulated S-shaped canal blocks that were randomly assigned into three groups (n = 10): ProTaper Universal, ProTaper NEXT and iRace. Each group was instrumented per its manufacturer’s directions.
CONCLUSION ..The iRace system resulted in the least mean canal deviation. The apical foramen position was least shifted by the iRace system. Andreas Herrmann of the University of Groningen in the Netherlands and his colleague have developed an antimicrobial plastic, allowing them to 3D print teeth that also kill bacteria. It’s an important issue, say the team, because bacterial damage to existing implants costs patients millions of dollars in the US alone.

New drug to treat betel nut addiction
The same brain mechanism that makes smokers dependent on nicotine may also work in causing addiction among users of betel nut, new research suggests.
