Dean of Dental College shot dead
Dean of medicine of Karachi Medical and Dental College Professor Javed Iqbal Qazi was killed in a targeted attack on Monday afternoon, Express News reported.
Qazi’s driver was also injured and is in critical condition with two bullet wounds.
The attack took place in Block M of North Nazimabad where the college campus is located. Four unidentified attackers on two motorcycles shot at his car as he left the college campus. NEWSLINK
Novel technique will make rct obsolete
A novel “regenerative” technique to repair infected teeth “SealBio”- claimed to be painless and cheaper than the traditional root canal treatment has been developed at AIIMS in New Delhi.
Developed by doctors Naseem Shah and Ajay Logani at the Department of Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics, it has obtained an Australian patent, while an application with the US Patents office is under process.
Treatment in dozens of patients and the 4-5 years follow up results have been very encouraging,” Seyed Hasnain, a professor at the Kusuma School of Biological Sciences of the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, said. TOI NEWS

Scientists chip away at mystery of what lives in our mouths
Scientists have pieced together sections of DNA from 12 individual cells to sequence the genome of a bacterium known to live in healthy human mouths. Researchers were able to reinforce a theory that genes in a closely related bacterium could be culprits in its ability to cause severe gum disease.
More than 60 percent of bacteria in the human mouth refuse to grow in a laboratory dish, meaning they have never been classified, named or studied.
The findings contribute to the Human Microbiome Project, which initially focused on characterizing microbial communities in the mouth as well as other areas of the body. FULL PAPER

UPA Govt has Rs 20,000-crore plan to build 31 medical institutes, undeterred by criticism that the largesse is being directed to constituencies of various Congress leaders.
The 31 institutions approved and being implemented include nine post-graduate medical institutes, 15 medical colleges, three dental colleges, two nursing colleges and two paramedical training institutes. TOI NEWS
