This Indian dentist is a world champ
Heena is the country’s first woman pistol shooter to rank world number one. After her spectacular performances in the World Cup this year, she earned the rank in 10m air pistol event. A graduate in dentistry, Heena took to shooting just to get admission in a dental college under the sports quota. But she got the seat on merit and a pastime became her passion. She won a team gold and silver in 2010 Commonwealth Games, and competed in the 2012 London Olympics too. Currently, she is preparing for the World Championship. NEWSLINK

Govt Deals BLOW to MCI on teachers issue
NEW DELHI: The war between the Medical Council of India (MCI) and the health ministry escalated by another notch with the ministry issuing a public notice rendering void an MCI decision on teacher eligibility qualifications.
The ministry’s public notice was regarding the MCI’s decision to make DNB (diplomate of national board) holders ineligible to teach without their doing three more years of training in a recognized medical college. The notice stated that the MCI letter dated April 9, 2014 was “void ab-initio”. TOI NEWS

Anaesthetised patient falls and dies in Dental clinic
In a dental office in Düsseldorf, a patient died after a tragic fall. The 45-year-old woman, who had been treated under anaesthesia owing to a mental disability, woke up dizzy in the recovery room and accidently slammed her head against an aquarium.

Incentive-based project soon to keep kids off gutka
Ahmedabad Dental College, in collaboration with New York University’s School of Dentistry and Manipal University’s Dentistry College, plans to develop an incentive-based programme to curb the use of gutka use among schoolchildren. New York University professor, Dr Alex Schloss, who spoke on the programme at an interaction held at Ahmedabad Dental College on Saturday, said that he was shocked to see schoolchildren chewing tobacco in India.
An online webinar education platform, using Indian celebrities, will be developed to discourage use of gutka. TOI NEWS

NASHIK: Two dental college students in Panchavati were injured when their twowheeler collided with the official vehicle of assistant commissioner of police Hemraj Rajput on Monday morning.
Shailaja Piccha, 20, resident of Tilakwadi and Grishma Shah, 20, resident of Canada Corner were near the signal opposite the Rajiv Gandhi Bhavan on Sharanpur Road when the accident took place at 8.25am. TOI NEWS

3,000 times the bacterial growth on hollow-head toothbrushes
olid-head power toothbrushes retain less bacteria compared to hollow-head toothbrushes, according to researchers at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) School of Dentistry.
The results of the study are published in the August issue of the Journal of Dental Hygiene. Lead author and professor at the UTHealth School of Dentistry, Donna Warren Morris, R.D.H., M.Ed., notes that microbial counts were lower in the solid-head toothbrush group than in the two hollow-head toothbrush groups in 9 out of 10 comparisons.
