IS the PFM dead
PFM isn’t actually dead, and I am not even sure how one would be confident enough to declare it dead. I suppose if you called 100 random dental labs in the U.S., and could not find one willing to fabricate a PFM, you would have to concede that the PFM is not very healthy. If you called 100 labs today and asked the question, I can confidently say all 100 would say “yes.”
Shockingly, as of December 2013, the PFM now makes up a paltry 10% of the crowns that we are asked to fabricate by dentists . Keep in mind that in December 2013 we worked with just more than 42,000 dentists in all 50 states. So it’s a pretty good sample size that represents the U.S. well. FULL ARTICLE
Inflamed gingiva and metastases of cancer
Chronically inflamed gums may play a role in attracting metastatic cells, according to research published in the January 2014 issue of the Journal of Periodontology. Dental college victim of utter neglect
Patna Dental College and Hospital (PDCH), the lone government dental college in the state, is in a state of utter neglect. Established in 1960, the college lacks very basic facilities, to say nothing of advanced infrastructure. It doesn’t even have properly working dental chairs in the OPD, and has only six teachers with master’s degree. PMCH principal Dr N P Yadav, who has been given the additional charge of PDCH, has written to the health department to relieve him of the latter post. TOI NEWS

A paper to be published in the British Dental Journal says WA has one of the highest known rates of impacted tooth removal in the world.
The study questions whether Australia needs strong guidelines for dentists making clear when wisdom teeth should be pulled. MORE HERE

Tooth shape may be linked to gingival characteristics
If tooth shape could be correlated with a patient’s gingival and periodontal characteristics, dentists and patients could more realistically discuss outcomes during the treatment planning stage, which is especially important when planning dental implants in the esthetic zone. Also, dental surgeons, restorative dentists, dental laboratory technicians and patients would be able to communicate more effectively about treatment plans...MORE HERE

High-fluoride paste may prevent white spots from braces
Adolescents may not be able to get out of wearing braces, but using a high-fluoride toothpaste for the duration could help them avoid white marks the devices often leave behind, according to a new study from Sweden.
The special paste with almost four times the usual fluoride content helped prevent about a third of the chalky-looking spots among kids between the ages of 11 and 16 years old, researchers say. MORE HERE
