New Law to end donation system
If implemented effectively, the new law on regulation of fee could prove to be of great help for thousands of students seeking admission to unaided professional institutes, particularly those pursuing the medical stream, where capitation fee or “donation” is in the range of Rs 25-50 lakh, claim academicians.
Maharashtra has 27 unaided medical and dental colleges with more than 5,000 seats for MBBS, BDS, BSc (nursing) and other paramedical courses. Doctors at the Dr R Ahmed Dental College and Hospital in the city perform surgeries using the light from their cell phones. The reason: 14 of the 17 dentists’ chairs do not have overhead lamps that function.
This is the only referral dental hospital in the state. It draws patients from distant districts as it once did from Bangladesh, Nepal and Bhutan. Said to be the first dental college in the region, it was set up in or about 1920 through an act of charity of the eminent dentist after whom it is named.
