Dentist suspended by Health minister
Dentist Karuna Dhingra was found to be absent from duty during visit of Haryana health minister Anil Vij. This led to minister issuing orders for his suspension. Vij took a round of various wards and expressed annoyance over unhygienic conditions. He also took a strong note of doctors not wearing prescribed uniform and warned the erring staff of strict action. MORE HERE

MCI election challenged in Supreme court
SC on Monday issued notice to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and the MCI on a PIL seeking a CBI investigation into alleged rigging in MCI election in 2013.
A Bench headed by Chief Justice of India H.L. Dattu also sought the response of Dr. Ketan Desai, former president of MCI, to the PIL filed by NGO People for Better Treatment.
The petitioner has also sought prosecution of all the MCI members involved in the alleged rigging and amendment to Section 3 of the Indian Medical Council Act. MORE HERE LINK 2

Mouthwash and fancy toothbrushes- Waste of money
A dental expert has claimed that the effects of gum disease have been exaggerated to sell mouthwash and expensive toothbrushes.
Paul Batchelor, a senior lecturer at University College London’s dental public health unit, has insisted that gum disease – or periodontitis – is a normal part of ageing and bleeding when you brush does not mean your teeth will fall out.
He explained that brushing regularly with a fluoride toothpaste is the best method of protecting your teeth from decay – a more serious problem.MORE HERE
Gene associated with cleft palate identified
Scientists studying birth defects in humans and purebred dogs have identified an association between cleft lip and cleft palate — conditions that occur when the lip and mouth fail to form properly during pregnancy — and a mutation in the ADAMTS20 gene. Their findings were presented at the American Society of Human Genetics (ASHG) 2014 Annual Meeting in San Diego. LINK
Simple saliva test may reveal deadly diseases
UCLA research could lead to a simple saliva test capable of diagnosing – at an early stage – diabetes and cancer, and perhaps neurological disorders and autoimmune diseases.
The study, the most comprehensive analysis ever conducted of RNA molecules in human saliva, reveals that saliva contains many of the same disease-revealing molecules that are contained in blood. It was published online by the peer-reviewed journal Clinical Chemistry and will be published in the journal’s January 2015 special print issue, “Molecular Diagnostics: A Revolution in Progress.” MORE HERE
