Manipal medico gang raped
A 22-year medical student from Kerala was allegedly kidnapped and gangraped at Manipal, seven kms from here last night, a senior police official said.
The student was abducted from Manipal University campus when she was returning to her room from the library late last night and gangraped outside the campus, Udupi Superintendent of Police Dr Boralinagaiah said. LINK………over 1000 students protest
Dental nurse, 25, who froze to death
A young dental nurse in UK tragically froze to death yards from her sister’s house after finding herself locked out after a night out.
Bernadette Lee, 25, who was wearing a short dress, had no coat and had taken her shoes off, was found lying dead in the snow near to her older sister Jodie’s house.

Leading manufacturer Confident Dental Equipments. Bangalore made a state of art new factory at Bidadi, which was inaugerated by Sri Mallikarjuna Kharge and Sri HD Kumarswamy on 9-12-2012.
For over 6 weeks employes of confident have been on strike asking additional wages as commuting to new premises will need extra 3-4 hours daily. This strike has lead to paralysis of all operations which is causing hardship to existing and new customers.

Dentist commits suicide just before joining MDS
The alleged suicide of a 28-year-old dentist under mysterious circumstances on Sunday, sparked off an investigation against her husband.
Dr Sumathi MH, who was to join the Kempegowda Institute of Medical Sciences for her Master of Dental Surgery on Monday, was found hanging by a dupatta from the ceiling of her residence in Vijayanagar, Bangalore. TIMES NEWS

DIY test for periodontitis developed
Researchers have developed a new device to screen for the presence of matrix metalloproteinase-8 (MMP-8), an enzyme that is responsible for periodontitis. The saliva test is aimed at chronically ill patients and women wishing to have a child in particular because they are most at risk of adverse health effects due to periodontal disease.
Using the pain-free device, they can determine whether they have periodontitis within 10 minutes.
The test was developed by dentognostics, a German–Swiss company specialising in diagnostics, in collaboration with researchers at the University of Helsinki. It will be available for €34,95 in pharmacies and can be ordered at www.periosafe.de/start/. MORE HERE

Dear Friends, last week we had a renowned Prosthodontic speaker who told the gathering, ” please do not go in for Zirconia bridges as they fracture, if at all you do it do it only for a single unit”.This was a bit of a surprise for all of us as we have been hearing from various companies, speakers about the superiority of Zirconia over PFM crowns.Can members please tell me your personal experience whether the zirconia bridges frquently fracture esp at the connector, or is it a fault of the laboratory. Best way to deal with dentin hypersensitivity
The results from this study suggest that application of dentine bonding agents, to teeth diagnosed with dentine hypersensitivity provides the greatest improvement in dentine hypersensitivity at 2 weeks and 6 months. This reduction in dentine hypersensitivity is greater than that achieved by the desensitising toothpaste tested and a non-desensitising toothpaste. Journal of dentistry LINK

Dental hygienists in the Kerala state say that they are facing uncertain times in the state with the government allegedly sidelining their services and scrapping posts of dental hygienists in the dental colleges.

Link between sleep apnea, TMD
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) has negative consequences much beyond the annoyance of keeping one’s partner awake. In previous studies, it has been linked to cardiovascular disease and systemic hypertension in the long term and fluctuations in blood pressure and heart rate in the near term. Now this currnt study finds OSA is also associated with TMD ( Journal of Dental Research (July 2013, Vol. 92:7(suppl), pp. S70-S77).
