National institute for Dental Research to be Established
The Centre has sought land from Delhi government to set up the first All-India Institute of Dental Medicine and Research in the national capital on the lines of the premier AIIMS.
Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan has written to Delhi Lt Governor Najeeb Jung seeking 20 acres of land in the central part of Delhi in order to set up the institute, which is aimed at providing a boost to dental services and research in the country.
“Dental sciences in India have progressed tremendously in the last couple of years and we now have a large pool of dental professionals, including specialists, in the country.
“Although there are a number of medical institutes engaged in clinical services and research, there is no dental institute of national importance focusing on dental services, research and development,” Vardhan says in the letter.He further said that his ministry is committed to setting up five such institutes across the country. Dentist jailed for filming employee
A Central Texas dentist has been sentenced to 21 days in prison for taping a female employee changing in the office bathroom.
Sixty-seven-year-old William Birdwell pleaded guilty Thursday in Bryan to improper visual recording.
Birdwell was appointed to the Texas Board of Dental Examiners by Gov. Rick Perry in 2009 and resigned after being arrested in May. MORE HERE

Implants without anesthesia
London, July 17 (ANI): Paul Gascoigne recently had a dental surgery without the use of any anesthesia as he was afraid that he would get hooked on pain-killing drugs.
The 47-year-old football legend posted on twitter that he had three implants into his jaw in a one hour and 45 minute operation to screw the implants, the Daily Star reported.
Gascoigne admitted that he didn’t take pain meds as painkillers could further lead to drinks and drugs and he didn’t want to go down that path again.NEWSLINK

Dutch dentist on the run in France
Police in France have launched a man-hunt for Mark Van Nierop, a Dutch dentist, who last year was charged with voluntary violence causing mutilation or permanent disability”.
French newspaper Le Parisien reported this week that Van Nierop had not been seen since charges were lodged last year. NEWSLINK

Milk teeth stem cells help treat chronic diseases
Stem cells, which have the potential to protect from life threatening diseases, can be ‘locked’ within your family teeth. Now, dentists have introduced process to send milk teeth to Mumbai-based labs to harvest milk teeth for future use of stem cells.
Dentists claim that though only two samples have been collected by the Mumbai-based lab from the city but there has been a steep rise in the queries being raised by parents about the facility in the past three to four months. More HERE

Support for rapid HIV testing in dental surgeries
More than 80 per cent of oral health patients are willing to receive rapid HIV-testing in dental settings, which could help reduce the spread of the HIV according to a groundbreaking study revealed today at a Sydney University HIV Testing Symposium.
The first of its kind study of 521 Sydney-based dental patients assessed patients’ willingness to undergo rapid HIV testing in dental settings, their preference for HIV testing-type type and their willingness to pay for the test. NewsLink
